Summary: The pursuit of sustainable forest management requires the monitoring of effects resulting from our management practises and activities. Criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management have been developed through the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers to allow for the measurement of progress along national scales. Local level indicators, which are developed to suit local and regional conditions, provide the framework for monitoring on-the-ground changes and assessing their influence on the many components of sustainable forest management. The model forests that make up the Canadian Model Forest Network have been intensively involved in selecting, measuring and reporting on local level indicators since 1997. This document compiles and describes the information on local level indicators that the Canadian Model Forest Network has developed to date. It covers information on processes, protocols and methodologies developed for the identification, development, monitoring, reporting, used and application of local level indicators.

"This report has been prepared by a consultant, Martin von Mirbach, for the information purposes of the Canadian Model Forest Network."--p. [5]
