Dissertation note: Thèse (M.Sc.)--Universite Laval, 2006. Abstract: The eastern North-American population of Harlequin Ducks is classified as of "special concern" by COSEWIC (2006). Because of the importance of staging areas and, especially, the moulting period in the species'life cycle, a better understanding of its ecology and needs in terms of habitat is essential. I examined temporal patterns of abundance, the distribution of individuals within this area and habitat features that influenced distribution during moult and fall migration in the Gasp ̌Peninsula. The number of individuals occupying the study area was higher during fall migration than during moult and was mainly composed of females. The population demonstrated a higher selectiveness during moult, when more factors impacted on the presence and number of individuals. The moulting period started at the end of June, to end in early November, and had a significant impact on the individuals'behaviour.
