The distribution, abundance and biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated in nine lakes, in Nova Scotia, May to July, 1987.Eight of the lakes range widely in pH (3.6 - 6.3), total phosphorus (3.3 - 39.8 mg/L) and calcium (0.35 - 6.3 mg/L) while Soldier Lake,Halifax County, has an internal pH range (4.9 - 6.8). Several macroinvertebrate groups, especially Pelecypoda, Hirudinea and Gastropoda apparently do not occur in lakes of low pH (5.0). The bivalve, Pisidium sp. occurred in one acidic lake at (pH 5.2) which is apparently the lowest pH occurrence at such a low calcium level (0.35 mg/L). Macroinvertebrate richness was reduced with increased levels of acidity but nutrient availability apparently controlled the macroinvertebrate abundance and biomass in the lakes.
