The project area for this earth cover classification was a 3,318,442 ha (8.2 million acre) area in the Northwest Territories centered south of the town of Inuvik. A Landsat TM Scene (Path 62, Row 12 with southern shift of ~22%) was used to classify the project area into 40 earth cover categories. An unsupervised clustering technique was used to determine the location of the field sites used to ground truth the satellite imagery. A custom field data form and digital database were used to record field information. A total of 546 sites were visited between July 7th-19th, 2001. A Bell Jet Ranger helicopter was used to gain access to most sites, and a Bell Long Ranger helicopter was used to access sites in the northwest corner of the image.
