In recent years, increased activity by forestry, oil and gas, mining, hydroelectric, agriculture, recreational interests and climate change has greatly expanded the potential for impacts on the WBF ecosystem. The consequences of these impacts on wetland systems remain largely unknown. Waterbird information for the WBF is scarce, with linkages to the underlying habitats poorly defined, if at all. A landcover inventory and mapping project was initiated on a 32,000 km2 LANDSAT TM scene centered near Utikuma Lake (55 54' N, 115 02' W) in the Boreal Plain of central Alberta (Fig 1) with final digital and hard copy projects scheduled for delivery by December, 2001.
