Conservation easements...: a new habitat securement opportunity for Ducks Unlimited Canada Rod Fowler

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Oak Hammock Marsh : Ducks Unlimited Canada, 1996Online resources: Abstract: Conservation easements are a new legal tool in some provinces of Canada that provide conservation agencies with a long term security alternative to fee-simple acquisition. Although conservation easements are relatively new in Canada, they have been in use in the United States for many years, primarily by governments, conservation agencies and land trusts. To date, DU Inc. has signed 23 conservation easements covering 60,000 acres, and 12 easements are currently under negotiation. Because conservation easements would provide DU Canada with an additional tool to secure waterfowl habitat, Ducks Unlimited staff across Canada have been aggressively pursuing provincial legislation that would grant non-government organizations the legal right to hold these easements. After a decade or more of effort, the provinces of P.E.I., Nova Scotia,Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia have now passed conservation easement legislation.
