As part of the biodiversity species inventory of the Quill Lakes region and international shorebird monitoring, special focus was devoted to migratory and resident use of the Quill Lakes by various shorebird species. With ample shoreline, extensive mud flats and rich food sources, the Quill Lakes offer an important if not essential resting and staging area for migratory shorebirds en route to their breeding or over wintering ranges. In addition, the Quill Lakes offer a variety of breeding and foraging habitat for resident shorebird species. Suitable shorebird foraging habitat, and nesting habitat, on three sections of shoreline on Little Quill Lake and two sections of shoreline on Big Quill Lake were surveyed multiple times between 10 July 1999 to 24 August, 1999. Each study area was given a name based on land ownership or relative location.
