Pairs were formed prior to arrival on the breeding grounds in early May. Harlequins confined nearly all activities to swiftly running waters, but also used stretches of abandoned stream-channel. Pairs were not territorial; home ranges were linear and consisted of approximately 1 to 2 km of stream habitat.Considerable overlap of home ranges occurred, especially at favored feeding sites. Density was approximately one pair per favored feeding sites. Density was approximately one pair per 1.1 to 1.5 km of stream.Males comprised 64 percent of the breeding population.
