TextPublication details: British Columbia : 1999Online resources: Abstract: British Columbia provides breeding habitat for at least 1.7 million waterfowl or approximately 4% of the breeding waterfowl population in Canada. The Intermounatin Ecological Region (Intermountain) alone, which represents 34% of the province, hosts 1.1 million breeding waterfowl comprised of 26 species of ducks and Canada geese (Branta canadensis moffitti). Density of breeding waterfowl in the Intermountain ranges as high as 36.3 pairs/km2 (94 pairs/mi2) in the Central Interior, which is comparable to some of the best remaining prairie and parkland landscapes in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Furthermore, this region is extremely significant to breeding Barrow's goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica) and provides nesting and brood rearing habitat for 60 - 90% of this species total world population.
