Ministry of Forests, the University of Northern British Columbia and Ducks Unlimited (DU) was initiated to conduct a landcover inventory and mapping project on a 3.2 million ha LANDSAT TM scene, centered on Ft. Nelson, BC. Complementing the inventory, an evaluation of use, by waterfowl and other wetland-dependant avian species, of selected wetlands within the scene was also proposed. The overall intent of the survey was to provide an indication of the importance of the various wetland types to breeding, and post-breeding waterbirds in the Fort Nelson area. In addition to waterfowl, wetland habitats used by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, 1999) listed or provincially sensitive species (e.g., trumpeter swan, and American bittern) were also to be specifically identified through this faunal inventory. The program was designed to facilitate analyses of waterbird density of variab
