University of Manitoba,Description: 49 (24) p. : ill. ; 28 cmOnline resources: Abstract: The successful production of winter wheat in Manitoba has been erratic due to winter kill. While many earlier attempts to grow winter wheat in Manitoba have generally been unsuccessful, current research has shown that winter wheat can successfully be grown under zero tillage management. Zero tillage ensures survival of winter wheat by allowing standing stubble to remain upright. The standing stubble serves to catch and hold snow which insulates the winter wheat from severe winter temperatures. During the spring of 1980, an extensive program was initiated to examine the production requirements for winter wheat in Manitoba. This report examines the results of trails conducted in the first year of this program. The winter of 1980-81 was exceptionally mild, and resulted in little winter kill in these experiments.
