Around each sample site,9 vegetative and 5 physical parameters of the habitat were measured.T-tests and a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed that beaver dam sites were related to: increased densities of the forage species trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), willow (Salix spp.), and white birch (Betula papyrifera); increased densities of woody plants with a diameter of 1.5 - 2.5 cm; increased stream gradient (active dams--1.10%; no dam sites--0.50%); decreased upstream watershed area (active dams-- 521.1 ha; no dam sites--6,247.3 ha); and decreased cross sectional area (active dams--1.29 m2; no dam sites--15.8 m2).
