However these studies have dealt with single species of ducks and the data have been mostly qualitative. Furthermore, habitat analyses have dealt with univariate sets of data and do not take into account relationships between variables. In recent years attempts have been made to employ multivariate statistical procedures to study habitat selection by dabbling ducks (Livezey, 1981; Mulhern, 1982). Kaminski et al. (1977)used a multivariate analysis to separate used and unused nesting sites of Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Heagy and Cooke (1979) used stepwise discriminant analysis to separate nesting and non-nesting sites of Lesser Snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens). The objective of this paper is to provide an insight into diving duck nesting as a basis for management designed to maintain or improve diving duck production.
