The drainage area upstream of the Big Grass Marsh, which outlets into the Whitemud River downstream from Gladstone, is about 1000 square miles. The major tributory, the Big Grass River rises in the eastern slopes of the Riding Mountains and flows southeasterly to empty into the northwest corner of the Marsh. The surface area of the Marsh (at elev. 868) is about 32,000 acres, with an additional 32,000 acres subject to inundation from time to time adjacent to the marsh. The marsh encompasses land in the rural municipalities of Westbourne, Lakeview and Glenella and the local Government District of Alonsa. It has been reported that most prospective homesteaders generally avoided the Big Grass Marsh until around 1900, when considerable interest was expressed in reclamation of the Marsh by connecting to Bi
