Ducks Unlimited Canada,Description: 30 p. : ill. ; maps ; 28 cmOnline resources: Abstract: An evaluation of breeding waterfowl use of 20 D.U. level-ditch projects throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba was continued in 1980.Blue-winged teal (Anas discors), mallard (A. platyrhynchos), and lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) were the most frequently occurring species on level ditches within the 3 prairie provinces. Estimated densities of indicated pairs were greater in Alberta than in Manitoba. Higher densities were recorded on parkland level-ditch projects than on projects in forested regions. Pair densities translated into costs per duck of $10.00 or less on 8 of 9 Alberta projects, but only on 2 of 9 Manitoba projects were the cost estimates less than $10.00 per duck.Lower population levels and poorer water conditions in Manitoba compared to Alberta in 1980 were identified as possible reasons for the lesser pair densities. Criteria other than pair density alone should be considered to economically justify level ditching. Slightly higher pair densities were recorded onItem type | Current library | Collection | Call number | Status | Date due | Barcode |
