Some important wetland areas throughout the Yukon have been identified (Soper 1954, Mossop 1976, Milligan 1978, Dennington et al. 1983, Dennington 1985), however, these studies were primarily intended as inventories of important bird habitats with respect to spring and fall staging, breeding and moulting areas, but not as comprehensive waterfowl breeding studies. Other studies of waterfowl summer use of riparian wetlands in the Yukon are those of McEwen and Johnston (1983) and Johnston and McEwen (1983),which investigated the use of rivers and their associated wetlands by Canada Geese and other waterfowl in the Yukon River Basin. In an effort to investigate many aspects of waterfowl ecology on riparian wetlands, a waterfowl/wetland study was initiated on the Dezadeash River by Northern Biomes Ltd. in 1984.
