By means of earthfill dams, impoundments have been created at favourably situated locations along natural drainage contours, which are normally intermittent in nature (filled with water or flowing only during spring runoff and following periods of extensive precipitation). A spillway bypass, which accommodates overflow water levels, is an integral part of the design of every Ducks Unlimited project constructed. However, since the projects are only sporadically filled to such peak levels, the downstream channel, below the dam, is intermittent. Some years ago the technique of slow water release by means of a 2 plastic siphon (5 aluminium irrigation conduit fitted with a control valve has also been utilized where larger volume flow rates are desirable) was devised to supply water users downstream with water for livestock and to keep the downstream creek channels alive
