A proposal to release canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) onto Southern Ontario breeding habitat. TR Gadawski

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: ON : 1983Online resources: Abstract: The canvasback (Aythya valisineria), more than any other waterfowl species, symbolizes the North American wildfowling tradition. As one of the most sought after game species, it is often referred to as the King of Ducks. Despite its popularity and widespread management efforts, canvasback populations continue to decline (Trauger, 1975). Both the breeding ground surveys and January inventories show a downward trend in Canvasback numbers for the 20 year period 1955-1974. Overs its breeding range, its numbers are averaging 560,000 birds but because of disparate sex ratio's this translates into a much reduced breeding population of approximately 140,000 pairs (Bellrose, 1976). Hunting season closures and other restrictive regulations on canvasback harvest, in place since the early 1960's (Serie, 1978), further underline the gravity of the situation.
