TextPublication details: MB : 1979Online resources: Abstract: In 1979, we continued the pre- and post- evaluation at Wilson River Marsh. Number of indicated breeding pairs (IBP) increased by 71% over 1978 but the effect of the ditches' construction could not be discerned from the effect of the increased water level in the marsh. We also initiated studies at seven other projects located in the Prairie provinces. Number of IBP per km (per mi.) of ditches in the different projects ranged from 7.4 (11.9) to 23.3 (37.5) and averaged 9.4 (15.1).At Wilson River Marsh, ditches with a sinuous pattern had greater use by pairs than straight ditches (mean length = 125 m). Such relationship between straight and sinuous ditches was not found at Grant's Lake. Six hundred and fifteen spoils (8.7 ha) were searched for duck nests.Numbers of nests per ha (per ac) ranged from 2.3 (0.9) to 18.6 (7.5) and averaged 7.9 (3.2).
