PUP was designed as the precuser to a newly announced program by Ducks Unlimited called PRAIRIE CARE (Ducks Unlimited Canada, June 27, 1989, News Release).Prairie Care will provide financial and technical support to Alberta farmers who wish to introduce sound land management practices which are conservation oriented and will improve and protect waterfowl and wildlife habitat. Prairie Care is part of DU's commitment to the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP). The goals and delivery of PUP are consistent with Prairie Care and the NAWMP. PUP is an integrated soil, water and wildlife conservation support program. The primary objective of the Pothole and Upland Program is to create secure dryland nesting cover to increase waterfowl nesting success while protecting associated wetlands.
