Emergency Agricultural Use of Saskeram Wildlife Management Area 1980. D.W Cross

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: The Pas : Manitoba Natural Resources, 1982Abstract: Drought conditions in the province prompted the Manitoba Government to allow emergency agricultural use of Provincial Crown Lands. The Saskeram Wildlife Management Area was one of a number of W.M.A.'s where emergency haying was allowed. Water levels were lowered in Saskeram Lake in an attempt to provide of what appeared to be, potentially available sedge and grass lands. A barge was imported from Saskatchewan to provide access to hay sites in the Saskeram Wildlife management Area. The amount of hay harvested in the Saskeram Area was far less than anticipated as nine local farmers harvested 1,086 tons from 673 acres. Only fifty acres were cut below the 853' level as ground conditions remained soft and wet. Reduction in Saskeram Lake Level was of little value to the emergency hay operation. Most of the hay harvested was cut on old upland sites not affected by the Saskeram Lake level.
