The values of wetlands to society: an introduction W.F Cowan

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: 1981Online resources: Abstract: Conversion of wetland habitat proceeds in Canada in an unplanned and unmanaged way, mainly due to public ignorance of the many benefits that native wetlands bestow. This study was initiated to identify and quantify these values in order to stimulate public concern for preserving marshlands. A general review of the literature was performed to identify the values, determine the accepted valuation methodologies and organize the information. A box-chart model was developed to guide measurement of the specific values identified and the values were divided into 10 categories to help determine the kinds of expertise required to carry on the measurements. Further analysis of specific values would then adhere to the guidelines provided by the model.
