The lake bottom is flat with gently sloping shorelines.When wet it floods 5,000 acres and is an important duck production and moulting area. During years of below average runoff the lake flooded to a shallow depth and lay at the mercy of high temperatures and wind. The frequency of wet years was insufficient to maintain beds of aquatic plants while by the same token terrestrial plant communities and agriculture were also precluded. With a lack of plant communities in the upstream end of the lake the bottom soils lacked a supply of organic matter, a component which assists in binding soil particles together.Consequently, the bottom silts were easily disturbed and turbidity became extreme.
